DELHI ADARSH TOILET MISSION

Inspired by Prime Minister’s vision of Swachch Bharat Abhiyan, Sampurna started a project called ‘Delhi School Adarsh Toilet Mission, 2016’ in February, 2016. The objective of the project was to ensure that the toilets of the municipal corporation schools are clean and usable. Over 555 MCD schools have been approached through this initiative where a self- administered survey was filled detailing the conditions of toilets for students by the respective community school leader. The community school leader visits the school twice in a month to ensure that the toilets are in proper working conditions meeting the basic hygienic and cleanliness motive. The community school leaders are provided regular trainings and they co-ordinate with the safai karamchari of the schools, students, teachers and principal. Sampurna urged the school authorities to consider and accept the fact that hygiene ought to be maintained in order to encourage children, especially from disadvantaged backgrounds, to use the toilet. We emphasised that school authorities should contribute to lessening the children’s health issues by giving them accessible clean toilets rather than increasing the risk factors brought in by unhygienic surroundings. It brought a noticeable change in the mindset of the school management and staff that toilets for children should be usable, clean, hygienic if we want to see our children physically and mentally healthy.
